Private chats and groups are visible only to their members. Group owners can add or remove members. Added members can read saved group history. Leaving or removal ends access to the group and its files.
Muting stops message alerts for this chat. Archiving hides it from your active list and keeps its history; it does not mute alerts.
The gray text in an empty message box is a suggestion from 24 family-friendly ideas. Tap the sparkle button to put it in the box, edit it if you like, then tap Send. Nothing sends automatically, and suggestions never replace a draft. A fresh idea appears when you open a chat or send a message.
Tap Transcribe beneath an audio message to turn speech into text using Cloudflare AI. The transcript is saved for everyone in this chat; use Show transcript or Hide transcript to expand or collapse it. Transcription supports audio up to 10 MB and only runs when someone requests it. Auto-transcribed text may contain mistakes; the original recording stays available.
Link Google first. If your installed app asks for sign-in, use the same Google account to return to your history.
Choose your own four-digit PIN the first time you open this update. Family Room locks after five minutes without activity. Open Settings → Lock now to lock immediately, or Change PIN to choose another.
In Settings, enter your PIN and choose Enable device unlock to add a passkey on a supported device. Device unlock starts automatically when you reopen a locked session on a supported browser. Your phone controls Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint or screen-lock verification. Cancelling or failing returns you to PIN and recovery; Use PIN instead is always available. Forgotten PIN? Sign in again with linked Google, then change your PIN in Settings within five minutes. Without Google, ask Rob for a fresh invitation.
Tap a message, then choose Star to save it. Open Chats → Stars to recall saved text, photos and files. Your Stars list collects your own saves. New stars also appear on the message for everyone in that chat. Earlier private saves remain private until you remove and star them again.
Tap a text message, or ⋯ on a photo/audio/video message, to open reactions and Details. Media controls play inline; ⛶ expands photos and videos. Choose a quick reaction or More emoji for search, categories and skin tones. Change it anytime, or tap the same reaction again to remove it. Reactions are visible to members of that chat.
Tap + beside your message, then Location or Request location. Choose the chat before sharing. Requests never reveal someone’s position without their response. Tap a location message to see coordinates, accuracy, capture time, or delete your coordinates.
Settings → Location controls optional new-sign-in pings and deletion. Positions expire after 24 hours and are excluded from backups. Browser/device permission is required. Unfinished captures are not shared after leaving the app. Background tracking is not supported.
Open Settings (⚙) to turn notifications on or off for this device. On iPhone or iPad, open the installed home-screen app first. Allow the phone’s notification prompt. Focus / Do Not Disturb and device settings can silence alerts.
Alerts show the sender and activity type. Message text, file names and coordinates stay private. Choose Settings → Notifications → Hide notification details to show only “New activity” while keeping alerts on. Off stops future alerts to this browser; already delivered notifications may remain on the phone.
Personal invitation links work once and expire after seven days. A signed-in device stays connected for 30 days. Once Google is linked, use it to sign in on other devices.
Checking backup status…
Daily encrypted copies include saved messages, account settings and uploaded files. Recovery is tested in a separate instance. Ask Rob for recovery help; restored devices must sign in again. Backup copies are retained until a retention policy is chosen.
Messages and files stay with your family account. Access is restricted by conversation membership. Messages are stored on the server and are not end-to-end encrypted; server administrators can access stored content.
Profile pictures are visible to the four family members. Only a generic offline page is cached by the installed app; drafts and waiting messages stay on this device until sent.
Verify with Google before adding the icon. If the home-screen app asks you to sign in again, use that same Google account. Your messages stay with your family account.

Enable device unlock to automatically use Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint or your device’s screen lock when returning to a locked session. Your PIN stays available as a fallback. Your phone chooses the verification method; biometric data stays on your device. A passkey may sync through your password manager.

Red: Do Not Disturb or quiet hours. Messages still arrive while alerts are silenced. This is app activity, not proof a message was read.
Optional and off by default. Sends one fresh position after signing in with Google or a personal link, while the app is visible. Opening the app or unlocking with your PIN does not send a ping. Each device still needs location permission.
Coordinates, map previews and requests expire after 24 hours. Coordinates are excluded from backups. Preview imagery comes from OpenStreetMap through Family Room; the provider sees the approximate map area, not names or the exact pin. A shared message remains, but its coordinates become unavailable. Anyone who saw them may have copied them. This is not live tracking.
